Department of Environmental Affairs – CITES CoP17
September 2016 saw the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP17) hosted in South Africa, and for the first time on African soil. As part of the Flauna Consortium, Grounded Media’s task was to develop and implement a comprehensive communications campaign, with a specific focus on sustainable utilization of biodiversity and the fight against wildlife trafficking, as well as provide public relations services to the Department of Environmental Affairs in preparation for CoP17. Our services also extended to conceptualising and implementing a Legacy Programme that would ensure that local communities benefited from this momentous occasion. The Youth Conservation Programme is an awareness programme was developed to mobilise youth around conservation in a way that stresses the importance of every individual playing a role in the protection of South Africa’s natural wealth, while simultaneously highlighting the possibilities for the social economic upliftment through conservation.
