The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is an official programme of the Department of Science & Technology and Department of Basic Education and as has received recognition from the Presidency
The Eskom Expo’s primary aim is to encourage the youth of South Africa, and Africa to participate in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) activities in order to promote an interest in these areas with the long-term view to developing scientific skills.
In practice, the Eskom Expo has also become a creator of opportunities for young learners to develop and pursue their scientific interests in an encouraging and rewarding environment, and to improve their tertiary education prospects.
The Eskom Expo sees learners from 31 regions across the country competing for a ticket to the prestigious Eskom Expo International Science (ISF). Thousands of learners compete at the regional level and only the very best and most promising young scientists are are selected to represent their regions at the national level.
For over seven years Grounded Media was tasked with growing the profile of the competition. Grounded Media used an integrated approach that include extensive use of PR and media relations together with a strong digital media component.
This required that the PR team together with photographers travelled to the regionals and the finals to host media and capture the compelling stories of the participating learners. In addition Grounded Media managed outside broadcasts, facilitated media interviews throughout the year and managed the social media aspects of the project. While working with creative and media agencies to ensure that the Eskom Expo brand was top of mind in the education space.
